Twenty-seven states and the District of Columbia allow anyone who is registered to vote to use an absentee ballot. Twenty require an excuse. Three vote 100% by mail.
This week’s states with vote-by-mail (absentee) deadlines are mostly on Friday October 26. Alaska’s deadline is Saturday, October 27.
- No excuse needed: Alaska, Arizona, Idaho, Iowa, Nebraska
- Excuse needed: Texas
Why vote on paper?
You can vote in the comfort of your home (no lines!). Take as long as you like with all the research/notes that you need.
Should a recount be needed, your ballot is printed on paper and thus not susceptible to actual or theoretical problems with a computer. This makes paper voting more secure.
